ADAMEK,
CWO William A. - 1920 - 2004
@ Chas: 1957-1960
& 1962-1966
1616th Support Sq
San Antonio, TX

Arlington National Cemetery
9-29-04 Entry information by daughter, Betty Adamek
- Class
of 1968
CWO William "Bill" Adamek, whom many of you knew as
"Mr. Adamek," passed away on March 5, 2004 in San Antonio at the age of 83 after deteriorating
health for the last three years. The family agrees that we would
not trade those seven years for any place else in the world. Those years are
even singled out in his obituary.
He retired in August '69 from the USAF at Norton AFB, CA with over 28 years.
Mom and Dad moved to San Antonio after about a year and he eventually got on
with the Postal Service and retired again after 10 years. He spent the next
25 good years of his life doing whatever they wanted to do. They traveled
visiting family, friends, military friends, and attending reunions for the
Civilian Conservation Corp, the Night Fighters, a group from Morocco,
Châteauroux High School and his beloved Bellaire High School in Ohio.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen, son Alan, myself,
grandchildren Jill, Andy, Kari and great grandson Dylan. There is a website
for my father at www.mem.com, type in Adamek in the search and then click on
his name. There are 80 plus pictures on the website of his life, family and
even his interment at Arlington National Cemetery. You are also able to
leave a tribute message if you would like. I am so sorry that he was never
able to see this website. It would have given him such enjoyment to see
everything, and I would not have been surprised if he would have remembered
everyone of you that he ever had contact with.
My father, mother and
I returned for the US Veterans Reunion in Sept '98 and it was wonderful. If
you knew about it and did not go, you really missed an opportunity of a
lifetime. It was the first time we had returned and I am so glad that my
parents were able to make the trip. One of the first things we did was to go
to Déols so he could see the building where his office was and he even went
wandering in. I have returned to visit friends a couple of times and more
than ready to go again. Yes, much has changed but much has remained the
same.

consolidated into the 1992nd Communications Squadron and ultimately shipped up
to Weisbaden (Lindsey Air Station). I played football on Fred Russell's Team

remember when Butch died in a car accident and we never could replace him. I
still have a photo of that squad with Bill Gillard the halfback.

I am R. P. Castille's sister, Deborah. I have sad news to pass on. R.P.
passed away on Monday, September 17th after a courageous battle with cancer. We
are preparing for his funeral wake tonight in Baton Rouge and his funeral
service tomorrow. I know he will be sad to miss replying and sending his
thoughts for the occasion. [She's referring to the
Greetings to Joe book.] I have been asked to do a eulogy for him and in the process
of going through some of his photographs, I came across many of him from his
time in the Air Force. I could see that that period of time represented some
of the most memorable days of his life. He was a Francophile extraordinaire. I'm sure if he were alive today, he would have been on a plane to France at
this very moment.

1985, but I have fond memories of the base and living there, even though I
didn't at the time. We lived on the economy and there were no indoor toilets or
heat, and my mom had to wash clothes by hand. We first lived in a small town Chateuamellient and a dr. and his wife befriended us, the Toulons. I would love

FORMAN, Brigadier General Robert D. - Passed Away June
19, 1971
Commander -
1602nd Air
Transport Wing
@ Chas beginning September 29, 1961
General Forman was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1911. He attended Southwestern University, Memphis, Tenn., for two years and studied law at the University of Memphis for the following two years.
In 1938 he joined the Army Air Corps reserve, earned his pilot's wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant in September of 1939, going on active duty in September 1940. The general trained flying cadets and instructed advanced pilots at Kelly Field, Texas. In 1943 he became a member of the Air Transport Command, the forerunner of the Military Air Transport Service.
Flying a B-24 from China to the Philippines in 1949 General Forman made the first flight of the war to establish a direct link between Chinese and American Forces. On his first flight he carried secret documents from General Chennault to General MacArthur. In 1945 he was the chief pilot for the India-China Division of the Air Transport Command. The general was personally commended by General Tunner, former MATS commander, for his performance this job. With the advent of the Berlin Blockade, he was sent to Germany to direct operations for the combined British and American forces during the Berlin Airlift. For his performance he was awarded the Legion of Merit "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service ..." Subsequently he commanded a troop carrier group in Europe, but when the Korean War started he was sent to direct operations for the Combat Cargo Command in the Far East. During the winter of 1950, General Forman was responsible for evacuating wounded Marines from the Chosan Reservoir in Korea. Flying C-47s, his unit successfully airlifted 4,600 casualties in five days. The general was himself trapped with the Marines for five days while the wounded were being evacuated. He received the Silver Star, a cluster to his Legion of Merit; and two clusters to his Distinguished Flying Cross for achievements during the Korean conf1ict. Later he became deputy director of operations for MATS, commanded an air transport; group at Dover, Del., and in 1956 went to Evreux-Fauville, France, where he was base and wing commander.
In September 1958, he was made commander of the 1611th Air Transport Wing,
McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. Leaving McGuire, he assumed command of the 1602d
Air Transport Wing at Châteauroux, France, Sept. 29, 1961. General Forman is a
command pilot with more than 9,200 hours in the air and more than 24 years of
military service. (Current as of April 1962)

GRANLUND,
Donald W. -
Passed Away 1997
@ Chas 1963-66
Squadron: ?? - Electronic Maintenance
12/30/2002 Son's Entry:
My name is John Granlund. My Dad was a USAF vet who
passed away in 1997. I don't know much about him and have even less in the
way of photos. I do know he was an electronic maintenance type and since
his death I've come into possession of many of his personal military
papers. I can navigate my way around much of that easily seeing I am a now
retired US Navy Chief Warrant Officer. I'm mostly interested in locating
any old comrades for photos of him and possibly my family. His name was
Donald William Granlund, I think that he may have been an Airman First
Class or S/Sgt, sometime between 1963-66. His wife's name was Lidia and
she was Italian. Any assistance would be welcomed!

12/17/2006 - [jpnote: I had left
John a voice mail some time back - He returned my call and supplied more
details about his father. I hope someone from Chas' 1992nd knew his
dad and would share some memories of him.] |

GUNN, Howard -
I think Howard was in 7373rd USAF Hospital Sq
[jpnote: Howard was the choir director of the Protestant Church
Services at La Martinerie during the late 50's & early 60's. He played the
organ beautifully and upon his return to the States (San Antonio, TX) he
continued his musical career. He was the Music Director at Lovera Baptist
Church in San Antonio.
[jpnote: Howard
and his wife, Marianne, were friends with my family until his death sometime in
the late 70's or 80's. Howard was Bob Carpenter's (7373rd Hospital
Sq) roommate at La Martinerie.
(Bob
recalls that Howard was known as Deano at the time.) My mother
and I sang in the choir at the Base Chapel Protestant services with Bob.
We practiced in the cafeteria at Touvent (410).
Howard returned to the
states to my hometown, San Antonio, TX, and remained friends with my mother and
attended the same church. He married a lady named Marianne.
Unfortunately, they have both passed away several years ago. I still have
several books of sheet music that belonged to Howard. We also sang in a
French choir with Howard which was located in downtown Châteauroux.

HEFLEY, William
T.,
Major General - Commander AMFEA
Retired July 31, 1963. Passed away Aug. 15, 1991
[jpnote: Excerpt from Air Force
Links] "In July 1956 General Hefley left Sacramento for his
assignment as commander, Air Materiel Force, European Area. General Hefley
moved his h eadquarters
from its original location at Wiesbaden, Germany, to Châteauroux France,
May 15, 1958.
As the AMC commander's representative in Europe, General Hefley managed
the conversion and transition of an expensive and cumbersome depot system
into a streamlined and flexible system for supporting U.S. Air Force and
allied units in the European-African-Middle East area. During his tour,
three major depots and five minor depots were closed out, command
personnel strength was reduced from 24,000 to less than 6,000 people, and
operating costs were cut by $35 million a year.
In place of an expensive and relatively-inefficient overseas depot system,
General Hefley instituted a decentralized and more flexible logistics
structure. This system, which places overseas air combat units on direct
supply support, from the U.S. and which handles their aircraft maintenance
needs through European contractors was the result of a three-year long
program to revitalize the obsolete logistics network which existed in the
European-African-Middle East theater.
On Aug. 15, 1960, General Hefley was transferred to Headquarters Air
Materiel Command, Dayton, Ohio."

HOUGH, Col. Luther Walker

of Saratoga, CA passed away
June 12, 2000. He was born in 1920 in Honolulu.
11-26-05 jpnote: I
visited Nancy Sullivan ('66 Chad Student) at her home in San Antonio. She gave me
several
photos and Châteauroux souvenirs to scan and post to the website(s).
One of the souvenir items was a clipped article from I suppose the
Base Newspaper from 1964. The article was about the High
School Honor students. On the back of this same clipping was
an article about Col. Hough and his velvet paintings. I could
barely make out his name since the clipping is torn. I did a
little search and found his son, Chip, who was a junior high student
at Chad. Chip and his wife, Jonne, live about 50 miles south
of my house. I spoke with Jonne and we determined that Col.
Hough was indeed Chip's dad. His mother lives in California
and she has the collection of paintings referred to in the article.

I went to first grade on the base in Châteauroux and was delighted to be able to see pictures of where I was! My grandfather-Lt Col Lloyd Ives- was stationed there under General Roby and we have many fond memories of that time.
Anyone know Mary Aster Dunkin or the Vucovich's? My grandfather (who

Field Maintenance Group
1-11-06 - Entry by daughter, Gayle Ann -
I am not sure about the squadron, as I am the daughter of Gary Ladoceour,
now deceased, who served in the Air Force, and it was he who was stationed
there. Thank you for putting this site together. I have really enjoyed it.
Not searching for anyone in particular. I just wanted to sign the guest book on behalf of my
father.

Born @ Chas]
1-06 Entry from wife,
Dorothy: We lived at Arthon, outside
Châteauroux. Gary worked with the 7373rd Maintenance Group in Déols. He was an
airborne radio operator. They were flying supplies all over Europe if I
remember correctly.

LUNDSTROM, Douglas E.
866th EAB - U.S. Army
@ Chas: 1954-55
St. Louis, MO
Friend of Jack Harnett & Jake Hawley
1-12-07 from Jack Harnett It is with sad regrets that I must
inform you of the death of Douglas Lundstrom, who passed this past Sept. '06.
Doug boarded the USN Maurice Rose and traveled to Châteauroux with Jake, Joe and
myself and returned to the USA by air in late Aug of 1955 with Jake and I and
some of the other 866 Vets. Doug's bride, Carol (Carolyn), called me last eve
and informed me of Doug's death. Doug leaves his wife, three sons and their
respective families. Carol indicated that neither she nor Doug were computer
literate and therefore did not use the e-mail, but she did enjoy talking on the
telephone. Some of you may remember back in 2004 when Jake Hawley met and spent
the better of a week trying to locate those of the 866th EAB., we were unable to
locate Doug, however the angel of the 866th, Jenelle Peterson, was later able to
find Doug and passed his address along to Jake and me. |

 Eulogy
from
John
Doyle: On May 1,
2003, Juan "Marty" Martinez of La Coste, Texas passed away at age 76. I received
the call from his wife. Apparently he was in his yard and may have been stung by a bee or some insect and had a reaction. Full military services were held at Ft. Sam Houston in
San Antonio, Texas and a church service was held on May 5, 2003
in his hometown of La Coste, Texas, a suburb of San Antonio.
Marty was at Chas from '61 to '65 and was an NCO. His wife Violette is a
former french national who was from Châteauroux and met Marty while she was
working as a telephone operator at La Martinerie. They have two grown children.
His son, John, is a graduate of the Air Force Academy and is on active duty as a
C-130 pilot, recently assigned to the European Theatre.
We all remember Marty as a real stand up guy who backed down from nobody.
As a veteran of three wars, he retired with a disability as a result of being
injured in Vietnam while with the Special Forces. He cannot be replaced for he
was my father figure and perhaps yours as well. Our baseball trips with him and
others were nothing but the best of times.
When Bill Boatman, Jim Ledbetter, Evo Mini and I were with him in '01,
Marty was dealing with failing health but was too proud to let it bother him.
That time with him was special then and we all knew it. You see, we were now
grown men giving hugs, and expressing love and respect to those who made a
difference. Thank God we made that trip to visit him then. Rest in peace
Marty......John Doyle

MEAUX,

@ Chas:

Entry from son, Joseph Jr.:
My father was a Loadmaster on the
C124's and stationed at Chateauroux from 1961 to 1963, which put me in 4th and 5th
grade at the elementary school. We had lived in base housing apartments right
near the school, and later were living in a trailer nearer to the base. We
moved in February 1963 after the death of my brother.
[jpnote: Lee Bryant wrote his memories of Chateauroux in June 2004 and sent them to me to
post. At that time, he recalled someone he worked with who had a french name he didn't
recall. When T/Sgt Meaux's son, Joseph Jr., signed the guestbook, Lee
recalled that it was his father he has remembered these 40+ years.] |
